🌱 City To Remove Kensington’s Historic Streetlamps + Alert San Diego

by

Hello, everyone. It’s me, Bettyann Pernice, your host of the San Diego Daily — here with news of what’s happening here in our community:

  • Residents in uproar as City plans to remove Kensington’s historic streetlamps.
  • Register for Alert San Diego and be notified of emergencies or disasters.

But first, today’s weather:

Partial sunshine.🌤️ High: 64, Low: 53.

Here are three of the top stories today in San Diego:

  1. The antique streetlights that grace Kensington Heights are scheduled to be removed. City officials say the lights will be replaced with similar lights that are safer, more efficient, and more reliable. Area residents say they would prefer to have the antique lamps retrofitted, which would cost $5,000 each, rather the $12,000 cost of new lamps. Residents have hired an attorney to help preserve the lamps and the character of the neighborhood. (Local Today)
  2. Register your cell phone, VoIP phone number, or email address with Alert San Diego to receive notification of emergencies or disasters. Emergency response personnel will notify registered citizens at risk with directions to evacuate or directions to shelter in place. Also, Alert San Diego will send notifications regarding gas leaks, as well as missing persons. Landline phones are already connected to the 911 system and are already registered. Register your cell phone, VoIP number, or email now. (Ready San Diego)
  3. Gifts of experience are all the rage! San Diego Moms have created a list of family memberships that deliver great experiences for the family. SeaWorld, Sesame Place, Legoland, Balboa , Park Explorer, San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, San Diego Discovery Children’s Museum, the New Children’s Museum, and the San Diego Botanic Gardens all offer family memberships for you to consider. Check out the details and find an experience package that will make a great gift for your family. (Times of San Diego)

From my notebook:

  • Ramona Wildlife Center: “It’s finally December, though it doesn’t quite feel like winter in San Diego. But sunny skies couldn’t deter the team at our Ramona Wildlife Center as they set our to create a “snow day” for the raccoons in our care! We hope you enjoy watching these critters dig into their winter wonderland of enrichment as much as we do!” (San Diego Humane Society via Facebook)
  • Shop with a cop — a great success: “Shop With A Cop is back! We joined our regional & federal partners to give over 300 kids a day they won’t forget! We all started our morning at SeaWorld, where we had breakfast and learned about bottlenose dolphins. After learning about the animals, all the kids rode in police cars to Target, where they got a $200 shopping spree! Our hearts are filled with joy seeing the kids have the time of their lives.” (San Diego Police Department via Facebook)
  • Volunteers in the garden: “Ever wondered what it takes to run 37 acres at the Garden? We not only have an amazing team on staff here at the San Diego Botanic Garden, but an enthusiastic and hard-working group of 250+ active volunteers who participate in a variety of assignments and events that help with all aspects of the Garden, both on grounds and off!” (San Diego Botanic Garden via Facebook)
  • Our members help our history: “On the last day of the #MemberAppreciationWeek we want to thank our members for being a part of our valued San Diego History Center. It was awesome to celebrate this week with you! We appreciate your support in helping us carry out our mission of preserving, revealing, and promoting the history of our region.” (San Diego History Center via Facebook)
