The Live Oak Library in Arcadia is live once again.

On Tuesday, Aug. 4, local families joined the Los Angeles County Library officials and Supervisor Kathryn Barger to celebrate the relocation, reopening and refurbishment of Live Oak Library.

The open house featured free books and snacks for kids, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a walkthrough of the newly remodeled space.

Arcadia resident Toni Ovalle brought her granddaughters to the open house.

“I think it was pretty cool because there were a lot of books — more books than I expected,” said Ovalle’s granddaughter, Bella Garcia, age 9. During the last few months before the library reopened for in-person browsing, Ovalle occasionally brought her granddaughters to the branch’s summer lunch program.

Live Oak Library Manager Denise Dilley is looking forward to inviting the community to the new space, which is nearly four times larger than before. “With all the light, the windows, the floors, the layout — it’s Christmas,” she said.

The new features include 38 reader seats and 10 lounge seats, a community meeting room with kitchenette and audiovisual system, a group study room, and an Early Learning & Engagement Center. Energy-efficient air conditioning and heating and drought-tolerant landscaping complete the package.

The library also offers four adult computers, five teen laptop computers, four children’s computers, two early learning computers and two iPads to access the catalog. A laptop vending machine features 12 laptops for in-library use.

Dilley enjoyed seeing friends of the library and local leaders gather together for the first time after working for more than two decades to open a new branch of Live Oak library. The library was previously located at 4153 E. Live Oak Ave. in Arcadia. It can now be found 1.1 miles to the west, at 22 W. Live Oak Ave.

The $7.3 million refurbishment project began on May 20, 2019 and was completed on Sept. 1, in the height of the coronavirus pandemic. Until now, the library has been open only for book drop-off and pick up and the summer lunch program for kids. Dilley said the lunch program currently serves 105 breakfast and lunches to 43 families, and will last until Friday, Aug. 6.

The refurbishment was made possible by the support of the Los Angeles County Library and Barger, who attended the open house. L.A. County Library Director Skye Patrick also attended the event, as well as representatives from the Monrovia-Arcadia-Duarte Town Council, Friends of the Live Oak Library, the city of Arcadia and the local community.

“Our new library will offer so many programs, classes and events — but above all, it will offer increased accessibility to everyone in our communities,” Barger said.

Arcadia residents Carissa and Tyler Wan, ages 8 and 11, attended the reopening. They used the library’s two new self-checkout stations to check out “Sunday Funday in Koreatown,” a biography of Frida Kahlo for young readers, and the children’s nonfiction volume “Something Rotten: a Fresh Look at Roadkill.” “We’ll be back soon,” Tyler Wan said.

Thomas Lim of Arcadia lives a two-minute drive from the library. Lim and his three children usually go to the library weekly, sometimes checking out 40 to 50 books. Now that visitors are welcome inside, Lim is excited to use the new space. “We like the new design,” Lim said.

Live Oak library is one of L.A. County’s libraries now open for select in-person service, including browsing the collection and checking out items, use of computers and printing, picking up holds, and free Wi-Fi. Visitors must wear face coverings and practical physical distancing.

The Live Oak library is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays, Wednesday-Friday, and noon to 8 p.m. Tuesdays. The library is closed weekends. The library offers such virtual programs as online crafting and watercolor classes for children and adults. Participants can pick up materials at the library and access programs online.
