ZANESVILLE – He’s always been one of those people – the one everyone goes to for answers because he knows computers.
“I knew even in high school my career would be in computers,” said Phil Wentworth. “I was the guy all the friends, and even teachers, would come to when they needed help.”
Today, Wentworth is the program director and faculty for the digital content media technology program at Zane State College – and more.
“Why I work in the IT field is simple,” he clarified. “I enjoy it and I’m very good at it.”
Now 39, Wentworth grew up in Zanesville, graduated from John Glenn High School in 2000, earned a degree in information technology and multimedia from Muskingum Area Technical College in 2002, a bachelor’s in business information systems from DeVry University in Columbus in 2006, and a master’s of information strategy, systems and technology from Muskingum University in 2012.
“Growing up, I remember being shy,” he recalled. “Yet my mother would frequently receive report cards that said I talked too much during class. I’m still not sure about that one.”
“I had an imagination,” he continued, “that was matched only by my interests in technology and wanting to know everything I could about my family’s Tandy computer. I remember having the notion that working with computers was the one thing I was good at. I’ve told my wife I wouldn’t trade my childhood for anything.”
Wentworth started his IT career a week after graduating college, providing management and support to companies.
“I worked,” he said, “at a company called Fabri-Form in New Concord for seven years as the network administrator. Looking back, it was probably one of my most pivotal roles. The job cemented my skillsets and set the stage with relationships that I have today.”
He started at Zane State in 2009. Then, officials at the school approached him last year about launching a new digital media program.
“What I admire most about Phil is his ‘can-do’ work ethic and unwavering dedication to helping students and his peers succeed,” assessed Jennifer Folden, director of marketing at Zane State College. “Phil has a way of making others feel at ease during high-pressure situations, and he is truly appreciated.”
“The IT field for me,” Wentworth noted, “is a passion that extends beyond the walls of Zane State. Not only do I get to work with several businesses providing IT strategy and support, but I get to merge this passion with mission work. I’m blessed to get to share this passion with my wife, Laura, working in the country of Belize. While there, we work in, and support, the local village schools. I go around fixing computers, printers, pretty much anything that plugs in.”
“Twenty years ago,” he concluded, “I never thought I would be teaching students about IT and digital media, get to share a passion for missions work with my wife, be a private pilot with my very own airplane, run a small business and be a founder of a non-profit. I can’t say everything has been easy, but I truly believe my story is an example of how focus and determination pay off.”
