Kids will head back to school soon, which means a tax-free weekend is right around the corner.
The tax holiday eliminates the sales tax on certain items and services to help people shopping for back-to-school supplies and some clothes.
Although the holiday mainly aims to help families preparing for the upcoming school year, the weekend is not just for students and their families.
Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas have upcoming tax-free weekends. Here’s a look at when each tax holiday is and what items will be exempt from sales tax.
Tennessee tax-free weekend 2021
Tennessee will allow tax exemptions on school supplies, clothing and computers beginning July 30 until Aug. 1, according to the Tennessee Department of Revenue.
School supplies, such as pencils and binders, and clothing items including shirts, pants, socks, shoes and dresses under $100 will be tax exempt, the website states.
Personal use computers, laptops and tablets $1,500 or less also are tax exempt.
Apparel and items normally sold together, like shoes, cannot be split to stay under $100. Jewelry, handbags, sports and recreational equipment, storage media, software, printer supplies and household appliances are not tax exempt.

From July 30 until Aug. 5, Tennessee will also exempt food, food ingredients and prepared food from sales tax. This does not include alcoholic beverages, tobacco, candy or dietary supplements, but it does include “qualified sales” of prepared food by restaurants, food trucks, caterers and grocery stores.
Gun safes and gun safety devices are also tax exempt, but not just for a weekend.
From July 1 until June 30, 2022, Tennessee is eliminating sales tax from gun safes and “any integral device to be equipped or installed on a firearm that permits the user to program the firearm to operate only for specified persons designated by the user through computerized locking devices or other means integral to and permanently part of the firearm,” according to the Tennessee Department of Revenue.
Mississippi tax-free weekend 2021
Mississippi will also exempt apparel and school supplies from sales tax from July 30-31, according to the Mississippi Department of Revenue.
The sales tax holiday applies to clothing, footwear and school supplies marked less than $100 per item.
The Mississippi Department of Revenue defines clothing as pants, shirts, blouses, dresses, coats, jackets, belts, hats and undergarments, while footwear includes any shoes except for skis, swim fins, roller blades and skates.
School supplies include items such as pencils, erasers, backpacks, textbooks, calculators and notebooks.
Computers, clothing rentals, accessories, shipping charges and layaway sales are not eligible for sales tax exemption during the holiday weekend.
